Turntable Rotates Steam Locomotive - Airailimages American Steam Locomotives - Rail Heritage Center
Here's Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway's 1938-vintage 4-8-4 Number 700 taking a turn on the Oregon Rail Heritage Center's newly installed turntable at its Portland museum site in May 2024. We are indebted to Don Keller of Air Depot for sharing his video from that day. This video is part of the Airailimages American Steam Locomotives series.
Built in 1924 for Portland's Brooklyn railyard, this turntable was vital for orienting large steam locomotives for placement in roundhouse stalls, or heading out to a train assignment. It is one of the few turntables left where the public can see its operation, since the museum relocated it.
The locomotive on the turntable is the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle passenger locomotive number 700, part of the museum's collection. Number 700 has operated on excursions in the Northwest, and may return to running status again.
Seen in operation are the museum's Union Pacific SW7 diesel switcher, later rebuilt and called an SW10, and the collection's EMD SW1000 from the BNSF.
I'm Fred Johnsen for the Airailimages Channel. Thanks for watching, and thanks especially for giving this video a Thumbs Up. We appreciate it.

It helped close the gap in air cover over Torpedo Alley in the North Atlantic during the war. The Brits got a special long-range version. No tail or belly gunner positions. Extra fuel bladders and 20mm cannons in the nose turret. A U-Boat killer.

Sure is nice to see these old birds, wish Dad were still here to watch with me. He was a nose gunner in a Privateer, VPB-109, late 1944 to war's end. His squadron tested the Bat operationally, but it was a special crew trained specifically for it, and the plane was modified to carry it. Dad said the rest of the squadron wasn't allowed near it, for security reasons (it was still considered "secret" weaponry). If this film *is* from Okinawa and the date correct, Dad's squadron was stationed there at that time. That plane carrying the Bat *may* have been a plane from the 109.

This film illustrates that the US Navy was using the "curved approach" almost six months before the Royal Navy's FAA claims to have invented it. The airplane at the far right at 2:57 is clearly approaching the carrier in a turn. RN 1835 Squadron received their first Corsair Mk 1's after Aug 15 1943. The first time that RN Fleet Air Arm Corsairs touched a carrier deck was in late Dec '43 when they were craned aboard the HMS Victorious.

1:34 Tape covering the gun ports: my father was an Army Air Forces airplane mechanic on various Pacific islands during World War II. He told me that one time they received a shipment of something like 10,000 condoms. They were bit surprised, but they soon came up with a practical use. They stretched the condoms over the exposed barrels of machine guns on planes like the B-17, B-24, and some fighters, and secured them at the base with masking tape. This kept dirt, bugs, and rain out of the barrels, and when the air crews test fired the machine guns after takeoff, the condoms and masking tape burned off instantly.

    • @airailimages

Thanks for adding that bit of history. I recall hearing a similar story about B-17 ball turret gunners in 15th Air Force in Italy, where taxiing for takeoff could be notoriously muddy, risking getting muck in the exposed ball turret barrels if they weren't protected.

At 0:53 one of the aircraft isn’t coordinated on approach and yaws towards the deck handler…I don’t know his role and i don’t see paddles, but the yawing incoming airplanes propeller is heading right towards the guy on the deck. And he holds his position…when only the fact that the lucky pilot caught a wire saves the deck handler from getting chewed up by a bolter.

Wasn't the Casa Blanca class of CVE later fitted with Hellcats? I believe it was purposely designed as capable of tendering Hellcats as it was designed as a CVE from scratch (not a refitted hull). The Wildcat holds a place in my heart, particularly the FM2 version. I would like to see a full accounting of all of their actions/contributions particularly post Hellcat/Midway to include gun footage. This footage BTW is Awesome, a great find and Thank You for it.
